Towanda Area Jr/Sr High News

As part of the Foundation's mission to help support our schools and students, scholarships have been set up to be awarded to seniors who display a high level of character and citizenship. This year's recipients of the Towanda Area School District Education Foundation Scholarships were:

Towanda Area High School students were creating projects with renowned potterer Jack Troy. Mr. Troy was at the school for two days working with art and English classes. While there, he gave pottery demonstrations and poetry workshops. His visit was funded by a grant from the Towanda Area Education Foundation.

Classroom lessons set a foundation to studying a historical time period, but when students have an opportunity to interact with “living history” they gain an innovative perspective. In May 2013, Holocaust Literature students had two opportunities to expand their understanding of the Holocaust through the Holocaust Literature Beyond the Classroom Venture grant funded by Towanda Area School District Education Foundation.

Elsewhere in the world, Vulture species are declining in numbers. Due to the fact that scientist know very little about them, they cannot pinpoint a reason for their decline. Locally, vultures are thriving. For this reason, scientist are studying nesting habits, migration routes, and the total health of these birds.

Due to a grant from the Towanda Area Education Foundation, this year’s survival class had the opportunity to attend a high ropes course. The class attended Pocono Plateau Camp retreat where they were tested both mentally and physically.

Allen McNeal-Marks and Elizabeth Vana from Towanda Jr/Sr High School in Towanda, PA have been named a National Forensic League (NFL) Academic All American in recognition of speech and debate excellence and academic success.

For the second year, Towanda Area Education Foundation was able to purchase 10 Kindle e-readers for 7th grade reading classes.
