E-readers open up a new world of technology and text to students – many of whom would otherwise never have the opportunity. This puts reading at their fingertips.
The Kindles were used during Independent reading time, reading groups, and literature circles. Students applied and practiced reading strategies further developing their reading skills. Using the Kindles provided students with access to a variety of genres including poetry, plays, newspapers, magazines, and more.
Teachers Ann Smith and Mike Maurer firmly believe an important goal reached from this grant was the instilling of a passion for reading while creating lifelong readers. Studies show that e-readers are very motivating to students in the 21st century classroom.
