Patriot's Pen Essay Contest

Congratulations to eighth grader Jesse Shoemaker of Towanda Jr. Sr. High School . Our 7th & 8th graders participated in the annual Beirne-Webster VFW Post 1568 Patriot's Pen essay contest earlier in the school year. Jesse placed in the top three in his division and his essay was sent on to the District level. This year’s essay theme was, “Why I Appreciate America’s Veterans”. We are proud to announce that Jesse Shoemaker’s essay was chosen as the first place winner at the Districts. His essay has been sent on to the State competition. Congratulations again to Jesse for a job well done!

National Honor Society Induction

On Thursday, April 30th, Towanda Jr/Sr High School proudly held its 49th Annual National Honor Society Induction Ceremony. The program was held in the presence of the staff and student body of the school. In addition, many family members of the new inductees were also in attendance. Following a brief welcome by Principal Dennis Peachey, the current NHS officers conducted the induction ceremony. The twenty-seven new inductees were chosen based on their outstanding qualities in the four foundations of NHS membership: scholarship, service, leadership, and character. Following the induction of the new members, the 19 senior members were recognized with the reading of their future plans. Following the ceremony, a brief reception was held in the cafeteria for the new inductees and their families. Towanda Jr/Sr High School is very proud to announce the newest members of their National Honor Society.

A Taste of Indian Culture

On May 22, 2015 World Literature students enjoyed “A Taste of India” in the Towanda Area Junior Senior High School cafeteria as a culmination of the Asian literature unit in English II. The event was inspired by the reading of various Indian works of literature including: “Games at Twilight” by Anita Desai; “The Cabulliwallah,” “Song VII,” “The Golden Boat,” and “The Post Office” by Rabindranath Tagore; “Rama’s Initiation” from the Ramayana; and Nectar in a Sieve by Kamala Markandaya. The event was made possible by a Towanda Area School District Education Foundation Venture Grant and provided students with an opportunity to taste authentic Indian dishes catered by New Delhi Diamonds of Ithaca, New York.

Dress Code

With warm weather being here, we want to remind students and parents that they need to adhere to the set dress code with their school attire. Please be sure that tops have sleeves and appropriate neck lines and length. Shorts and skirts need to be at the appropriate length (fingertip rule). Available Awards

The following scholarships and awards are available to Towanda Area Jr. Sr. High School seniors. To apply, you must (1) write a letter of application stating which of the scholarships or awards you are applying for, what school you will be attending, your proposed major, and any other biographical data deemed pertinent. Please include in your letter a list of school and community activities. This list is important because several of the awards and scholarships have criteria of school and community activities; (2) furnish three letters of recommendation; (3) furnish some documentation or proof of financial need (i.e. copy of parents 2014 income tax return, copy of parents 2014 W-2, copy of FAFSA); and (4) be accepted by a recognized school or college and provide a copy of your college acceptance letter.
