Keystone Exams

Pennsylvania Keystone Exams will be administered to Towanda Junior/Senior High School students during the month of May. The Keystone Exams are end-of course assessments designed to evaluate proficiency in academic content areas. Beginning with the class of 2017, students must demonstrate proficiency on the Algebra 1, Literature, and Biology Keystone Exams to graduate. Students will be offered multiple opportunities to take the Keystones throughout their high school careers. Students who scored Basic or Below Basic on any subject tested during a previous Keystone Exam Administration will be included in this test administration.

High School PSSAs

The Spring 2015 Pennsylvania System of School Assessments (PSSA) will be administered to Towanda Junior/Senior High School students during the months of April and May, 2015. The English Language Arts Assessment will be administered to 7th and 8th grade students April 13 – 17, 2015. The Mathematics Assessment will be administered to 7th and 8th grade students on April 20 – 24, 2015.

Master and Grasshopper Art Show to be held at Mansfield University

Mr. Strickland and two of his students have been selected to represent Towanda Area Jr. /Sr. High School at the Loomis Gallery in Allen Hall, on the Mansfield University campus. The art show, which is called “Master and Grasshopper,” will run from February 25, 2015 to March 20, 2015. Reception and awards will take place Wednesday, February 25, 2015 from 6-8pm.

Yearbook Students Donate Part of Their Childhood for the Future Generations

“Ah! I remember Goosebumps!” Darren Kravitz reminisced. Preparing for delivery, he rifled through one of the boxes of donated children’s books accumulated for a K-4 school that lost everything. Another remembered, “I remember my mom reading that to me at bedtime.” This was a recent scene at Towanda Jr. Sr. High School where students held a book drive to share with another school in need.
Due to the recent cold weather, a water main break devastated the Miles Township Elementary School’s library. Miles Township is located in Center County or “smack dab in the middle of our state” as some would say.
Miles Township’s call for help was quickly answered by the Towanda High School Yearbook staff. They organized a book drive and gathered over twenty boxes of books to help Miles Township students carry on their own love of reading. Those books filled the car of Scott Geesey, the Jostens’s Yearbook agent who asked for Towanda’s help with the loss.
The Towanda Yearbook staff would like to thank all those who donated.

TASD Thanks VFW

The Towanda Area School District would like to publically thank the Beirne-Webster VFW Post 1568 and Ladies Auxiliary for their generous monetary donation used to purchase the new electronic sign at the Jr/Sr High School. The VFW has been extremely charitable with the district and its students over the years. Pictured are Principal Dennis Peachey; Mr. Oliver Crisp, VFW Finance Officer; Mr. Joe Nolte, VFW Home Association Manager; Mr. Don Richardson, Commander; and Mrs. Donna Richardson, Senior Vice President of Ladies Auxiliary.

Students Volunteer

Students from Towanda High School volunteered their time and services to assist the Salvation Army in their annual holiday programs. The students under the leadership of the National Honor Society, participated in bell ringing at local businesses and assisted with the Angel Tree Program which provided much needed items to local families in need during the holiday season.

Concussion Support Group

Steven Hicks is a Licensed/Certified Athletic Trainer for Guthrie Sports Medicine in Sayre, PA. He started the Sports Related Post-Concussion Support Group for Athletes and Their Families in November 2010, as a result of several students at area high schools sustaining concussions. A few students developed PCS (Post-Concussion Syndrome) with symptoms lasting from weeks, months, and even over a year plus. Many of these athletes and their families, especially the parents, didn't know how to deal with the effects of a concussion. Since concussions are not typically "visible" injuries, and there is often a lack of knowledge on how to manage concussed patients. Steven states the purpose in starting the support group* was to provide resources and knowledge regarding concussions and traumatic brain injuries for athletes and their families.

THS Students Create Rainbows

7th Graders at Towanda Jr. Sr. High School, were actively creating rainbows in test tubes today in Mrs. Lane’s science class. They were learning about densities of liquids, wavelengths of light, and how different colors are perceived by our eyes. They also learned a few tricks to make this experiment work better!

THS Student added to Chemical Hall of Fame

Towanda Jr/Sr High School is proud to announce that Sophomore Laura Larcom is the most recent addition to the “Chemical Hall of Fame”. Laura joins former inductees: Macarena Toledo, Kayla Brown, Kevin Blackman, Emily Gorman, Elizabeth Vana, Tara Landis, Alison Wickwire, Karen Esmus, Austen VanAllen, and Carolyn Weed. Mr. Hudyncia has been running the “Chemical Hall of Fame” for the past 10 years. In order to earn entry into the Hall, students must receive a perfect score for the unit on “Naming Compounds and Writing their Formulas”. Perfection (including spelling) must be achieved on all unit assignments, quizzes, and tests. Congratulations to Laura and all current members of the “Chemical Hall of Fame”.
