Mr. Dennis Peachey, principal of Towanda Junior/Senior High School, announced today that Ethan Jones and Marin Bovier have been named as this year’s Rochester Institute of Technology Computing Medal Award winners.

A little bit of South Africa arrived in our area when Brian McDonald brought 31 of his South African artworks to some of the World Literature classes of Phyllis McNeal and Tammy Templeton at Towanda Jr. Sr. High School on April 21 as part of their unit on South African literature.

Northern Tier Career Center is offering a Computer Science Camp for Bradford and Sullivan County students in grades 8 - 12. The camp will run from August 7th - 11th from 8 am - 3 pm. Please register by July 21st. A $25 registration fee will be due by the first day of camp.

On April 7, 2017, the Towanda High School Chapter of the National Honor Society inducted 47 new members in front of a packed auditorium of family, friends, and classmates.

There was a great turnout for the April Walk to School event on Wednesday, April 5th. Join us for the last Walk to School on Wednesday, May 3rd.

Our local VFW, Beirne-Webster Post 1568, sponsors an essay contest that is conducted nationwide. Students are given an opportunity to write essays expressing their views on an annual patriotic theme. This year Patriot’s Pen theme was “The America I Believe In”, which is for students in grades 6 through 8. The theme for the Voice of Democracy essay contest, for students in grades 9-12, was “My Responsibility to America”. Students write their essays as part of their English classes.

“What was your inspiration for the character of Azar?” Towanda senior Samantha Layne-Perkins asked that question of visiting author Tim O’Brien in Binghamton, NY, on Saturday, March 25, 2017. Tim O’Brien is a National Book Award winner and the author of The Things They Carried, a collection of stories based on his own experiences in the Vietnam War. O’Brien delighted the audience that filled the Binghamton High School Helen Foley Theater that night. The National Endowment for the Arts’ BIG READ program and Broome County Community College sponsored O’Brien’s funny, warm, human and heartfelt presentation.
