He read The Lorax, a book by Dr. Seuss, to the students. Mr. Rhodes talked with the students about how they can help our planet. He discussed the value of trees and how the planting of trees helps to improve water quality, and can result in less runoff and erosion. This process allows for more recharging of the ground water supply. In addition, the students learned that wooded areas help prevent the transport of sediment and chemicals into streams. The USDA Forest Service showed students how to plant and care for the seedlings. Each student was given a seedling to bring home and plant. Students were encouraged to watch over their seedling as it grows and were provided with a growth chart so they can keep track of their trees progress.
